One hundred million people? I don't think so.

      Google says:
An estimated 100 million people travel to Brazil each year to experience Carnaval, the iconic celebration on the streets of Salvador, Bahia [...]
Despite of the geographical inaccuracy, the estimation refers to a not very reliable "source", in my opinion. The number caught my attention because it corresponds to an increase of 52% of the total population of the country. The national entity responsible for the Brazilian airports reports (PDF, pt_BR) a traffic of 2.7M international passengers in the country on February 2010 (last year's Carnival happened between February 12-16). Adding the domestic passengers, the number goes to 25M in the same period. That makes me believe that the "statistic" is inaccurate by one or maybe two orders of magnitude.

After getting tired of so many half-baked CSV Java libraries, I decided to write my own.

      http://code.google.com/p/jcsvlib/

I challenge you to find a competitor library with:

      • an uglier name, or;
      • simpler to use.

I know it's a long time before my last post. But that's because I was on vacations. Certainly not since last November. But during whole December I was sort of... "unplugged". Before my vacations I struggled to deliver an essay about an open-source JCR implementation called Apache Jackrabbit, published in the Brazilian Java Magazine.

Now I'm working in a new project based on Apache Sling (where the aplication is RESTful and me, restless), and as soon as we have something demonstrable, I'll show it here.

I know I have not fulfilled some of my "old year resolutions", but the good thing about a brand new year is that we can try again.

An amazing 2009 for you all,

      Douglas

If you would like to get your hands dirty on content repositories in Java, but found no help to start, maybe the essay I wrote for the Cambridge Technology Partners Java blog can be of your interest.
It shows how to create the initial environment for a simple Java web project, so you can use it to bootstrap your next content oriented applications.

      Google Chrome is nice, but...

Google Chrome is a really cool browser. But I couldn't yet find a reason to drop Firefox so far. Besides:

      1. I'm not very keen on searching and entering addresses in the same text field. If I know exactly where to go, I type in the left; if I don't, in the right. And that's it, that simple. I totally understand that Chrome's approach is more cognitive for the average user, but the model simply don't work for me.
      2. Google Chrome introduces really a few revolutionary features when comparing it to Firefox. One of them is the fact that each tab is a distinct process for the OS. Theoretically, this means when one process crashes, the others should remain intact. In my short experience with Chrome, when one tab crashes, all the others get stuck anyway.
      3. Flash sites frequently crash on Chrome. I have no idea why.
      4. Everything Google releases is still in beta, Google Chrome is REALLY beta, while GMail isn't.
      5. Delicious browser integration is a must have.
